Cocaine is an alkaloid obtained from the coca plant native to much of South America. The leave of the coca plant have long been known to have analgesic, euphoric, and pain relieving properties, and have been in existence and use since prior to the 16th century.

Crack, on the other hand, is the more urban, low-cost form of cocaine. Costing less and offering a quicker and shorter high, though, creates a constant availability to return and get ‘one more hit’. Dealers continue to make money because crack is cocaine boiled down with baking soda and/or other thinners, and then smoked.
