This is probably due to the impact of AA . As a treatment, AA has enjoyed tremendous success in handling mental health and addiction in real life. Part of this is result of the nature of treatment–training the addict not to stand alone but to rely on an extended support system–both the tangible variety and the intangible. In a sense, it is like standing in a crowded elevator. If it is crowded enough, you simply can not fall. You are held upright by those around you.
