Today, Serenity Knolls is a residential treatment center that provides comprehensive services to adult men and women, ages 18 and above, whose lives have been impacted by substance abuse, chemical dependency, and certain co-occurring conditions. We are prepared to provide care to men and women whose struggles include, but are not limited to, dependence upon the following addictive substances: alcohol, cannabis, stimulants, sedatives, benzodiazepines, hallucinogens, methamphetamine, PCP, and opioids including heroin, morphine, and prescription medications. We also welcome men and women whose primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder is accompanied by co-occurring anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders, depressive disorders, trauma-related disorders, personality disorders, and temporary psychosis that is directly related to substance abuse. However, we cannot accept individuals who are struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain disorders, and psychotic disorders that are not the direct result of substance abuse.
At Burkwood Treatment Center, our philosophy of treatment is based upon the understanding that alcoholism (also called by different names, including “chemical dependency,” “addiction,” or even “Reward Deficiency Syndrome”) is a chronic, progressive disease that can be diagnosed and treated, and that abstinence is the beginning of permanent recovery. Most importantly, that recovery is a Way of Life!We understand that getting help is often the hardest step toward sobriety and we work diligently to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere to each person who chooses to begin recovery with us. We honor the unique experiences, voices, and strengths that each participant brings to the treatment process, and we endeavor to incorporate these elements into treatment whenever possible. Also, we place a premium on ensuring that all participants and their family members are treated with dignity and respect.A cornerstone of our program is the knowledge that accepting personal responsibility for wellness is a key to lasting sobriety. In the words of Bill Wilson, “The essence of all growth is a willingness to make a change for the better and then an unremitting willingness to shoulder whatever responsibility this entails.”At Burkwood, we recognize that many people with this disease fall into the pattern of managing their illness instead of managing their recovery. In other words, we recognize that the best “Relapse Prevention Plan” is a “Strong Recovery Plan” based on years of evidence delineating the recovery process. The ultimate objective at Burkwood Treatment Center is for each participant to achieve his or her treatment goals and develop the recovery skills and strategies that will support long-term recovery. By teaching participants and family members about the nature of the disease and empowering our participants to effectively manage their associated symptoms, we help them to place themselves in the best possible position to successfully pursue happier and healthier lives, free from the biphasic cycle of the illness.

Research is underway to develop new drugs that address other symptoms of alcoholism. Presently, there are three primary drug therapies used to combat alcoholism. Antabuse causes a severe negative reaction in individuals who drink. When mixed with alcohol, antabuse can cause a variety of symptoms ranging from sweating to convulsions. The idea is to associate drinking with these adverse reactions so the individual is less interested in drinking. Antabuse does not address the actual physical craving an alcohol experiences. Antabuse has significant risk to the user and should only be used by individuals serious about not drinking.
Treatment for Alcoholism
Unlike Antabuse, Naltrexone actually reduces the physical cravings associated with alcohol dependency. This drug therapy is available in an extended release formula. Generally the pill is prescribed for a specific period of time, such as ten to twelve weeks, as assistance when someone completely stops drinking. This is to prevent relapse which is likely during the early stages of recovery. Naltrexone is also available as an injection. As with any drug therapy, there are possible side effects with this drug. Side effects include joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety. Campral is the third drug available. Campral helps reestablish chemi...
