The purpose of drug addiction rehab is to help the addicted recover from their addictions regardless of what pattern of addiction the individual manifests: Excessive or inappropriate drug use; using drugs to feel normal; needing ever more drugs to experience highs; using drugs instead of having other life experiences; choosing drugs over profession, friend or family. In fact, in addition to these manifestations, the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists several additional possible criteria to determine whether or not a drug user is considered an abuser.
Addiction is a treatable condition, but there are many aspects to the detoxification treatment. Inpatient or out-patient facilities are available, as well as half-way houses and alternative therapy. The choice of chemical dependency program depends on many factors, from financial parameters to the degree of seriousness, type and length of the individual’s addiction. A number of therapeutic philosophies have been developed, but most of the coping skills these philosophies teach relate in one way or another to the same type of methodology as employed by Alcoholics Anonymous in their well known twelve step program.
